Winter can be harsh on skin, heightening its sensitivity and causing dryness, eczema and inflammation.

And with sensitive skin being on the increase with Western women, and adult acne being the number one skin concern in Asia, we could all use products that calm and soothe skin.

However, it’s not just what you put on your skin that makes a difference. How and what you eat and drink are important when dealing with reactive skin.

Here are some tips for improving inflammatory symptoms such as acne, rosacea and redness.

You are what you eat has never rung truer.

Blueberries –A powerful antioxidant, blueberries are outstanding for calming irritated and reactive skin. Mix a litre with a litre of soy milk or rice milk and have as a dessert or snack in between meals. However, stay away from milk and yoghurt as some research has linked skin inflammation to dairy products.

Green tea –Green tea is reputed to help reduce everything from bad cholesterol to the risk of cancer. The secret lies in it being rich in catechin polyphenols and powerful antioxidants that other teas don’t have.

Omega 3 –These fatty acids can be used both externally and internally to help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers, allowing water and nutrients in but keeping toxins out. They are found in flaxseed oil, linseeds, avocado, soybeans and fatty fish such as salmon and sardines.

B3 –Irritated and/or itchy skin is known to benefit from food high in B3 (niacid). It helps rid the body of toxic chemicals, promotes healthy skin and is thought to help relieve acne. Try eggs, fish, lentils, nuts, liver, broccoli and wholegrains. © Cover Media
