It’s a lesser talked about beauty woe affecting plenty of women. But despite the fact that the average person loses approximately 100 hairs every day, the tribulation of thinning hair is rarely addressed.

And let’s face it, while we all want a mane of soft, silky locks, the reality is that hair grows only about a half inch per month.

So, if thickening up your mane is on your agenda, read on for some top tips for voluminous locks.

Wash with care:

Over-washing can dry out your hair, so the less you shampoo, the more hydrated it will be and the longer it will grow without breaking. When you do shampoo, consider a sulphate-free formula. They often contain less harsh detergents, or none at all, and therefore help preserve your hair's natural oils. When your hair is well hydrated it is less likely to dry out and split, so use a conditioner even on the days when you skip shampoo.

Brush up:

If you're not careful, your hairbrush can actually do more harm than good. Ripping through wet tangles creates split ends, so when blow-drying with a round brush, don't pull too hard or you can break and pull out your hair. When you're not styling, avoid a brush altogether.

Eat well:

Focus on essential fatty acids that are key to scalp and hair health. They’re commonly found in fish and nuts, as well as foods rich in vitamin B, found in fruits, vegetables, beans and lean meats. You could also consider taking a supplement.

Rest and relax:

Easier said than done, but stress is believed to stunt hair growth and trigger hair loss. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle to worry or stress about thinning hair and then lose more of the hair you’re worried about, so try calming your thoughts with breathing exercises.
