Rockin’ tomboy hip-hop k-pop goth glam

SEE PHOTOS: Our editor gets back to her styling roots for the Luisaviaroma Firenze4Ever style lab, creating three looks based on music sub-cultures & having a fabulous time in Florence

I have to admit I was a little nervous about the “Style Lab” component of my visit to the Firenze4Ever event, I haven’t styled in ages. But thankfully with three floors of fabulous Autumn Winter 2013-14 looks to pull from a huge range of amazing designers I managed to run with the “punk glam grunge” theme and put together three looks.

My awesome model, Mayuri, was the perfect choice with her exotic mix of Asian looks, funky attitude towards trying just about anything. The shots were taken by Italian photographer Francesco Ormando, who might have a soft-spot for more romantic style but whose ability to do great portrait work and easy-going attitude meant he was excited to be doing something a little bit different.
But none of it would have happened without the amazing skills, charming personality, fabulous sense of humour and all round perfection of my assistant for the day Francesca Golini; she really was completely fabulous.
So, what did I style? Well, basically I chose looks that I personally would love to be able to wear if I were a lot taller and skinnier. Here’s a breakdown of what we did with some dodgy smartphone photos; stay tuned for the amazing shots taken by a professional soon.
The three looks were based on music and the streetstyle sub-culture that goes with it … Look one was all about rock and pop-rock, the second was based on hip-hop and k-pop and the third a mix of goth and electronica
LOOK 1: Tomboy rocker
The first look of the day being shot on Via Roma, Florence, Italy. Unfortunately this street is really popular with tourists so we really had our work cut out for us. Image: Niki Bruce
Mixing up sexy studded trousers with a man’s character tee, a cropped leather biker gilet and studded platform sneakers; swap into a classic stiletto pump and add a studded MCM backpack; two ways of doing his & hers
LOOK 2: K-Pop does hip-hop
Our model Mayuri channels Mingzi from K-Pop group 2NE1 with Jeremy Scott x adidas winged sneakers. Image: Niki Bruce
I was thinking specifically about k-pop girl group 2NE1 for this look, a mix of girlishness with a rose-print dress and practicality with print jeans and funky Jeremy Scott x adidas winged sneakers you can dance all day; swap to a sexy platform stiletto pump and add a Peter Pilloto cropped printed puffer jacket to walk the red carpet
LOOK 3: Sci-fi goth glam
This amazing headpiece by Italian designer Gilbert Halaby (above top) was the source of the idea for the third look ... totally sci-fi goth. Images: Niki Bruce
The whole look was based on the steampunk glam headdress from Gilbert Halaby; the message of future style by way of tradition was built on with a form-fitting long neoprene gown with sexy cutouts by Mur Mur. Adding a touch of the opposite is MCM’s leather studded clutch and studded shiny wellington boots. Swap to platform wedge ankle boots and add a graphic, moulded leather coat and we’re moving towards something from the Matrix, only so much more stylish … the future is now
