Last October, the Japanese lifestyle brand launched Uniqlo U, a range devoted to high-quality, everyday “elevated basics”.

Developed at Uniqlo’s Paris R&D Center, U is helmed by artistic director Christophe Lemaire (the French designer has his own brand and was previously with Lacoste and Hermes).

Among the 83 pieces in U’s latest collection are three dresses, one sweater, and one skirt created with 3D U-Knit.

3D U-Knit was developed at the Innovation Factory, a joint venture started last year by Fast Retailing, the parent company of Uniqlo, and Shima Seiki Mfg., Ltd, a Japanese manufacturer of knitting machines. It employs Wholegarment technology to improve fit and comfort using special knitting machines that produce knitwear in one piece without the need to cut and sew parts together.

The outcome? It eliminates seams (which can be annoying) so your garment fits and feels better, and is friendlier to the environment because the machines waste very little yarn during production. In Singapore, the collection is exclusively at the Uniqlo Global Flagship Store at Orchard Central and www.uniqlo.com/sg. Price range for the 3-D knitwear: $59.90 - $99.90.
