Trend: Bomber jackets are back

The Spring Summer 13 collections are starting to hit the stores and there is no doubt there is one coat that is going to do big business this season. The bomber jacket is back and has received a surprisingly chic makeover.

On the Paris runway, Loewe proved that the days of this cropped jacket coming in quilted, unflattering materials are long gone. The fashion house showed a khaki-leather version, which was emblazoned with leather roses all over the back. The flowers were layered in different shades of black and cream, with the jacket’s sleeves made of the finest chiffon.

The fashion house also showed sleeveless and hooded options, both of which worked just as well with casual pants as they did with a pencil skirt and heels.

Over in London, bombers were given a metallic edge courtesy of Jonathan Saunders, while even Karl Lagerfeld offered a take on the look on the Chanel runway.

Stella McCartney is known for her casual aesthetic so it was no surprise the coats had a sporty vibe on her catwalk, coming in shades of green, white and black.

When so many of fashion’s heavy-hitters offer up a look, you know there will be no escaping it. Although stores are starting to stock bomber jackets, it’s really a question of how far you are willing to go with the look.

If elegance is more your style, keep an eye out for a tweed-look version which will give a nod to those at Chanel. The addition of an over-sized lapel and zip detailing will stop things getting boring and you’ll be amazed by how much wear you can get out of it. Keep the fit tight and the piece will look as good with boyfriend jeans as it will with your super-skinnies and sky-high heels.

True fashion fans should delve into the metallic versions to channel two trends at once. We advise going for a bronze shade, as gold or silver can easily look too brassy.
