What do you get when to combine British underground fashion icons – two of them – and the cult fashion obsession that is the “Harajuku Girls of Tokyo”? The new Spring Summer 2013 collection by model fashionista Agyness Deyn for Dr Martens of course.
The Tokyo style of the Harajuku girls is already heavily influenced by British street style subcultures like punk and goth, so bringing this back to an iconic brand like Dr Martens makes perfect sense.
“As with the A/W-12 range, I wanted it to be accessible whilst having a slightly higher price point than high street fashion. It will appeal to girls who are confident and have a strong personal expression of style and identity in the way that they dress and what this says about themselves,” explains Deyn.
Taking a somewhat gruesome image, a close-up photo of her own eyeball, as the signature print of the Spring Summer 2013 collection, Deyn has designed a series of “Cabana” shirts in ochre and seafoam blue.
The style is apparently based on an old workwear shirt that’s been cropped to fit with the season’s midriff trend; the shirts are worn with high-waisted, long-line pleated shorts. There are also cute, and quite flattering, culottes; printed tees; and a few lightweight knits alongside a super cool denim biker jacket with knitted sleeves.
More denim is featured in a dress that can also be worn as a lightweight spring coat; another dress is sleeveless and features the eyeball print; yet another dress is a simple navy cotton with patch pockets.
Throughout the collection is an obvious 90s grunge aesthetic, which makes perfect sense when worn with Dr Martens’ iconic boots, also a symbol of the same period.
Adding to the Harajuku theme are the accessories – eyeball purse or satchel anyone? The footwear component comes in the form of chunky sandals with cute bows added to emphasise the Tokyo connection; there are flat and heeled versions that also include ankle straps and come in matte or patent leather.
This is the perfect collection for a summer of festivals or travelling; you’ll certainly fit in if you’re travelling to Harajuku anytime soon. As will all the Agyness Deyn for Dr Martens’ collections, this is sure to sell out quickly, so if you’ve spotted a “die, die, must buy” piece head down to the Wheelock store from mid-February, 2013.
