Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year with the lights, parties, presents and sparkles.  When you have a significant other to spend the holidays with, you don’t notice how much of the holidays are tied to having someone to share them with romantically.

But when you are single, the festive season can feel like a painful reminder of your singlehood rather than a joyful holiday, whether it’s catching up with old friends who are now in loving relationships or dealing with nosy relatives who want to know if you are seeing anyone. Rather than locking yourself up with some log cake and watching “Love Actually” on repeat, here are some practical tips on spending the holidays when you are single.

  1. Don’t mope

This is a rule that you should live by all year round and not just during the holidays. When you wallow in self-pity, you slip into this downward spiral. When you are miserable and bitter, it can repel good people out of your life. Just think about it, how many times have you walked into a room and thought, “Oh, that unhappy person over there seems nice”? We rest our case.

  1. Get into the spirit of giving

Christmas is all about giving. If you’ve got some spare time on your hands this season, it’s never too late to help out. You could volunteer for a charity like an animal shelter or even volunteer to cook a lovely meal for your family. You know what they say, give, and you will receive. Who knows you might just meet Mr. Right at an event you're volunteering for?

When you’re feeling lonely, you might find it a challenge to reach out to other people, but trust us, spending time with others and celebrating the festive season with those who are positive and encouraging will do you good.

  1. Seek escapism

If the thought of having to spend Christmas at home by yourself fills you with dread and despair, consider booking a last minute holiday. There are tons of last minute flights and holiday deals online, go on a ski trip or enjoy a spa retreat at an exotic beach resort. Do what your heart desires, after all, it is the season to indulge.

  1. Spoil yourself silly

Shell out some cash and buy yourself some exquisite champagne and a present or two. It’s a day of spoiling yourself. You can get all dolled up and hit the town or just stay in bed and catch up on all your favourite Christmas movies. The day (and the remote) is all yours.

  1. Be grateful

Being single during the holidays can get rough and it’s easy to get fixated on what you don’t have rather than focus on what you do have. Remind yourself of all the things you are grateful for – friends who care and adore you, family to celebrate Christmas traditions with and all the basic necessities that many in this world could only dream of having. When you think about all of the things that you actually do have, you’ll start to see how your life is actually full of love.
