Eat these Michelin-starred meals in Singapore for under $70

From posh Italian restaurants to hawker centre stalls, here is the list you need to know

When the Michelin Guide decided to award stars to more than just fine dining restaurants, we got more excited than usual (we're sure you feel the same way too). We decided a list of top 10 Michelin starred places in Singapore is in order, but without the hefty price tag. 

 

Corner House

Once the residence of botanist Eldred John Henry Corner, the refurbishedCorner House now serves Gastro-Botanica cuisine in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Chef Jason Tan was trained at Les Amis Restaurant, and Robuchon au Dôme in Macau, before moving over to Corner House. The garden atmosphere is apt for the restaurant's cuisine - a combination of food and botanical elements. Sink your teeth into the restaurant's signature kaya toast, a reintepretation of the classic Singaporean breakfast. You'll be pleasantly surprised. 

3 course business luncheon from $58++ per person. 

 

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle

This goes to show that great food doesn't necessarily need to be expensive. Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle made waves when it was recently awarded one Michelin star, with bowls of noodles ranging from $5 to $10. Not just because it's a hawker store, but its signature dish is none other than Singaporeans' favourite bak chor mee. If you're just as excited as us about this, you better haul yourself down to Crawford Lane soon because queues have started to form. 

Prices start at $5. 

 

Alma by Juan Amador

Goodwood Park Hotel's restaurant addition is an ode to Spanish-Asian fusion cuisine. Juan Amador is the owner of Alma, and is no stranger to the Michelin stars. What we love about Alma, apart from its signature pigeon dish, is the affordable 3 course lunch menu. 

3 course lunch from $39++ per person. 

 

Terra Tokyo-Italian

Tokyoite Chef Seita Nakahara found his love for Italian cuisine a few decades ago in Singapore, which made him open Terra Tokyo-Italian. He began by working in Italian restaurants in his hometown, then moving on to the real thing in Tuscany, Sicily and Piedmont. His techniques are purely Italian but he uses fresh Japanese ingredients. The wine list is extensive and comes from none other than Italian wineries, from regions such as Tuscany, Venice and Umbria. 

Executive lunch from $42++ per person. 

 

Shisen Hanten by Chen Kentaro

Before opening a branch in Singapore, Shisen Hanten has roots in Japan, the most famous being the restaurant in Akasaka which was founded by the late Chen Kenmin in the 1950s. A few generations later, Chen Kentaro introduced Shisen Hanten to Singapore at Mandarin Orchard. Their specialties? The spicy stuff such as mapotofu, fish in szechuan pepper sauce and spicy cold steamed chicken. 

Main dishes start at around $18. 

 

Rhubarb

The dining room at Rhubarb is small, just 7 tables, but we love the quiet ambience. Just you, a few others, and the chefs preparing a fabulous French meal in the open plan kitchen. Expect traditional French dishes with a twist by Chef Paul Longworth, such as beef tartare with cured duck yolk, seaweed and parmesan, and foie gras and king crab terrine. 

3 course lunch from $42++ per person. 

 

Tim Ho Wan

We all know about Tim Ho Wan when it opened its first branch in Singapore back in 2013. People, who were willing to queue up for an hour, were eager to taste just how good Michelin-starred dim sum is. Don't miss the pork buns, turnip cake, steamed egg cake and pig's liver vermicelli roll. This dim sum restaurant is one of the first with a low price point to make the cut for a Michelin star. 

 

The Kitchen at Bacchanalia

With no barriers to the open kitchen, you can witness the chefs preparing your meal at The Kitchen at Bacchanalia. The conception of the restaurant involved Ivan Brehm, Mark Ebbels and Alejandro Abad, who wanted to create a small dining space with an eclectic menu. Beef keluak goes with walnut pesto, and Assam tea ice cream with grapefruit jam. Their ingredients come from their farm in Cameron Highlands, so you know that everything is fresh. What they don't grow on their farm, they source from other farmers who share their values towards the environment and quality.

Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

Queues have always been expected at Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle, even before its Michelin star award. Expect the queues to get even longer, as word gets out to the international crowds about this hawker gem. As its name suggests, go for any of the dishes accompanied with the soya sauce chicken. Ready for the long wait? We heard it can be as long as an hour. 

Prices start at $3. 

 

Beni

The combination at Beni is perfect - French recipes with Japanese ingredients. The chefs are an all Japanese line up headed by Kenji Yamanaka, and we all know what perfectionists Japanese chefs are. There are only 15 seats, all surrounding an area where the chefs will perfect the dish right in front of you.
