Google has thrown away the wrappers and is tucking into its next generation mobile and tablet operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.
Ice Cream Sandwich features a completely new user interface that makes Android smarter and easier to use than ever before.
The fat-free operating system (OS) packs in a healthy serving of advanced features including enhanced notifications, facial recognition, voice commands, and near field communication (NFC) connectivity.
Google hasn’t forgotten to add exciting new social networking and sharing features too for users who are addicted to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
"With Ice Cream Sandwich, our mission was to build a mobile OS that works on both phones and tablets, and to make the power of Android enticing and intuitive. We created a new font that’s optimized for HD displays and eliminated all hardware buttons in favor of adaptable software buttons. We also dramatically improved the keyboard, made notifications more interactive and created resizable widgets,” said Andy Rubin, senior vice president, Mobile at Google.
It's clear that Google is looking ahead to tomorrow's mobile trends; Ice Cream Sandwich brings face and voice recognition, social network integration and NFC into the forefront of the Android mobile experience.
"People are at the heart of Ice Cream Sandwich. We rethought how you browse your contacts with the new People app, which combines high-resolution photos and updates from Google+ and other social services," said Rubin.
"We’re also introducing Android Beam, which uses near field communication (NFC) to instantly share webpages, YouTube videos, maps, directions and apps by simply tapping two phones together. Face Unlock uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with nothing more than a smile," added Rubin.
While people have been raving about Apple’s new voice-controlled personal assistant, Siri, Google has been working to enhance its own voice recognition features.
With Android 4.0, Google is introducing a powerful new voice input engine which offers continuous "open microphone" experience and streaming voice recognition.
"The new voice input engine lets users dictate the text they want, for as long as they want, using the language they want. Users can speak continuously for a prolonged time, even pausing for intervals if needed, and dictate punctuation to create correct sentences. As the voice input engine enters text, it underlines possible dictation errors in gray. After dictating, users can tap the underlined words to quickly replace them from a list of suggestions," explained Google.
Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich will be debuted on the coveted Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone which is due to be launched in selected regions around the globe from November.
