Let your inner hipster loose at the Hipster Festival

There is a new festival this weekend and the organisers have unapologetically named it Hipster Festival 2017

If you think this is a too-cool-for-school event only for hipsters, think again.

"It is a festival for everyone because there is bound to be a hipster in everyone. You just have to admit it," says Ms Bella Nabillah Sumardi, 24, one of the festival's four co-founders, who all work in events management .

Taking place at The Foothills in Fort Canning Park - opposite Liang Court - tomorrow and on Sunday, it is an all-local line-up of music, movies, food and retail. Admission is free. Retro rockers The Pinholes are the headline act tomorrow, and percussion ensemble Wicked Aura on Sunday. They will be joined by nine other bands, including dreampop act Cosmic Child, rock quartet Bakers In Space and hip-hop, electronica duo CampFire.

Expect to find Instagrammable bites such as ramen burgers and brightly coloured candy floss rolled up in a crepe to resemble a burrito.

A traditional ice-cream seller will set up shop for hipsters who prefer corn-flavoured ice cream wrapped in rainbow bread to a scoop of Haagen Dazs. Visitors can also stock up on unusual items, such as pandan body scrubs and bags with kooky prints.

The latest festival trend, body marbling, will be available too. Festivalgoers can dip their arms (or whole body if they are game) in a barrel of salt water laced with layers of glow-in-the-dark paint.

The question hanging over this festival though is: Why call it a hipster festival when any self-respecting hipster would never admit to being one? "This is exactly why we decided to hold a festival that puts the word out there," says festival co-founder Farhan Indra Ismail, 29.

And what about the term no longer being the buzzword it was a few years ago?

Ms Bella Nabillah believes it is still relevant today. "It's everywhere. Come on, if you're trying to set a trend and be out of the norm, you're hipster," she says.
