Fine art is one thing to splurge on, and fine art supplies is another. But $4,588 for a set of colour pencils?

Yes, it does at first sound hard to believe, but hear me out. This set of colour pencils is the limited edition KARLBOX, the product of a collaboration between the legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and the premium stationery manufacturer Faber-Castell.

Karl Lagerfeld, who has been a creative giant behind labels like Chanel and Fendi, as well as his own brand, designed the sleek black box that holds the art tools. The wooden frame of the box has removable drawers which hold over 120 painstakingly arranged shades and hues, selected personally by Lagerfeld himself. The individual drawers can be removed and set up as an artist’s work station.

Included in the box are 120 Albrecht Dürer Artists’ Watercolour Pencils, 60 Polychromos Artists’ Colour Pencils, 60 Polychromos Artists’ Pastels, 60 Pitt Artist Pens Brush, 13 Pitt Artist Pens Fineliner, three Pitt Artist Pens Metallic, 12 Castell 9000 Pencils, five Castell 9000 Jumbo Pencils, five Graphite Aquarelle Pencils, four Pitt Graphite Crayons, one Watercolour Brush … you get the idea. And that’s not even all that’s in there! In total, the whole set weighs about 16kg, and I don’t know about you but I’ve never seen an art set that’s as heavy as a small child.

Not only that, but this is a limited edition; only 2,500 sets have been made and only 50 are available in Singapore.

The KARLBOX is remarkably beautiful and even someone who is not an artist will be able to see what a beautiful piece of art it is in itself. So, with all this in mind, would you pay $4,588 for THIS colour pencil set?

The KARLBOX will be sold exclusively at Tangs at Tang Plaza from September 19, 2016.
