8 best prenatal fitness classes in Singapore

Keeping active while pregnant has countless benefits for you and your child, and may even pave the way for a shorter labour and delivery. We recommend eight prenatal fitness classes you can take from your second trimester.
 


TOTAL BODY WORKOUT

What: Maintain your fitness with Mom in Balance’s Pregnancy workout, a programme developed in conjunction with gynaecologists and physiotherapists. Each hour-long class combines stretching, cardio, strength and interval training. You’ll be sweating it out with other mums-to-be, so expect the classes to be energising and lots of fun!

How much: $150 a month for weekly sessions over three months. For unlimited sessions, opt for the Pregnancy Unlimited membership at $200 a month.

PERSONAL TRAINING

What: If you prefer one-to-one guidance, consider personal trainer Donna O’Shea, who will personalise training programmes that strengthen your muscles and build endurance to prepare you for labour and post-partum recovery. Each hour-long session is conducted in your home or condominium gym.

It’s suitable for women in all stages of pregnancy but those who wish to start in their first trimester should have had an active fitness regime before their pregnancy, and their doctor’s consent.

How much: $100 for a private solo session or $900 for 10 sessions. Private group sessions are available too. Additional travel costs apply to those living outside of the Orchard, River Valley, Novena and Holland Village vicinity.

YOGA

FITBALL

What: During InspireMum Prenatal Fitball classes, you use an exercise ball to perform upper and lower body exercises that are designed to strengthen and stretch your muscles, while improving flexibility, endurance and body alignment. How much: $12.50 to $35 per session, depending on the package you sign up for.

HAMMOCKS

What: Inspire Mum & Baby also offers Swing Pregnancy classes that will have you performing gentle exercises with the help of a silk hammock. The supportive, anti-gravity properties of the hammock reduce the pressure from your baby bump, enabling you to stretch and lengthen your spine. It’s a relaxing workout aimed at improving your posture and body alignment.

How much: $12.50 to $35 per session, depending on the package you sign up for.

PILATES

What: Breathe Pilates’ prenatal pilates classes are aimed at strengthening your pelvic floor and back muscles, thereby reducing muscle and skeletal imbalances that result from a growing girth. You’ll also build strength in your arms – priming you for future activities like carrying your baby. Each 60-minute class is capped at five participants to ensure that you receive plenty of guidance.

How much: $55 for a group session and $800 for 20 group sessions. Private sessions are priced at $130 per session and $2,000 for 20 sessions.

XTEND BARRE

What: Upside Motion’s Xtend Barre classes fuse elements of dance, ballet and pilates for a challenging yet safe prenatal workout. Working upright at the barre also provides stability during your workout.

How much: Drop-in classes are $40 each. A 10-class pass costs $345, a 20-class pass $655 and a 30-class pass costs $895.

UNDERWATER SPINNING

What: Aqua Spin offers spinning classes with a twist. Here, you’ll be cycling on a stationary bike that is submerged in water. Due to the buoyancy of water, the added weight of your baby is absorbed, reducing the strain on your knees and hips. The 45-minute workout also reduces water retention and the risk of varicose veins, while promoting blood circulation. You can take this class up to four weeks before your due date.

How much: The first trial costs $25. Subsequent classes are between $40 and $45, depending on the package you sign up for.
