For the first time in the history of the modern Olympics, London is to serve as the host city of the Summer Games (July 27-August 12, 2012).

On the occasion, the British capital will welcome spectators in a brand-new Olympic Stadium in East London. It took nearly three years to prepare the site, which will be the setting of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics.
